As the fifth facade of a building, the roof is an independent and complete visual interface that differs from facades and floors. It is also the core carrier for enhancing building recognition and enriching spatial experience. The fun roof design breaks the rigid image of a single flat and conventional sloping roof, balancing external visual aesthetics and internal spatial experience, transforming the roof from a simple enclosure component to a memorable highlight of the building. Design can rely on exaggerated and irregular shapes to create landmarks, as well as low-cost materials, openings, and greenery to achieve a delicate atmosphere.

Common styling techniques

1.Undulating curved roof: Breaking the traditional flat/single slope, using continuous curves, waves, and folds. Wave roof: continuous high and low undulations, producing dynamic contours with changing viewing angles, suitable for cultural tourism, commerce, and exhibition halls; Folded panel roof: With multiple folding lines and strong light and shadow segmentation, it can be achieved with low-cost concrete/steel structure; Hyperbolic thin shell, free-form surface: parameterized modeling, flowing without edges and corners, forming a sculptural roof landmark.

2.Multi slope combination and staggered splicing: A single roof is monotonous, and multiple units are spliced in height, length, and orientation.

Large and small slope roof clusters: staggered terraces, high and low interweaving, strong sense of village and hierarchy (commonly used in homestays and industrial parks); Cross slope, cross slope, and tiger window are staggered and stacked to break the monotony of the plane;

Suspended eaves with large overhangs: Some areas have excessively long overhangs, creating a contrast between reality and virtuality, and creating a floating fun with shadows.

3.Irregular geometry cutting: using unconventional geometry to break square shapes.

Slanted, triangular, diamond shaped, and polygonal roofs;

Excavation, corner cutting, and partial depression: opening large and small holes on the roof to form a rooftop courtyard and skylight courtyard; Inverted roof: Conventional roof flipping, with inverted cone and pyramid shapes, creates a strong visual contrast.

4.Layered and stacked roof (roof setback)

Multi story stepped roof, each level accessible to people: the outdoor platform is formed by stepping back layer by layer, with staggered heights and rich layers from a distance, balancing sightseeing and activities.
