Facade oblique cutting refers to the vertical design technique of using oblique cutting to treat the overall volume, local components, and facade corners of a building, replacing pure right angles with oblique slopes, and introducing oblique geometric relationships into the conventional vertical and horizontal orthogonal facade system to form shaped interfaces such as slopes, bends, and oblique edges.


Classification (divided by scale hierarchy)


1.Diagonal cutting of detailed components (microscale, most commonly used in residential buildings)

No modifications are made to the main building blocks, only partial oblique cuts are made to doors, windows, eaves, balconies, decorative lines, and panel corners. The process is simple and the cost is controllable.

Window frame and window frame oblique cutting: metal and stone around the window opening are trimmed at a 45 ° angle to form a frame style three-dimensional hierarchy;

Eaves and sloping roof: The top and floor waistlines are inclined outward to reduce the sense of heaviness;

Balcony side panels, vertical joint oblique cutting: Partially diagonally dividing the wall surface, dissolving the monotony of large areas of solid walls.

2.Local volume oblique cutting (mesoscale, commonly used for commercial and small high-rise buildings)

Cutting the local blocks of the building, only changing the corners, floors, and top contours, while keeping the main body square.

Corner cutting oblique plane: The overall oblique angle of the building plan's external corner forms a bidirectional inclined facade;

Partial cantilever oblique cut: The cantilever ends of balconies and podiums are tapered diagonally.

3.Overall volume oblique cut (macro scale, landmarks, public buildings, super high-rise buildings)

Multi sided and large angle cutting is performed on the complete building block to form a prism, diamond, and conical slope shape as a whole, with strong recognition of the shape.

Bi directional oblique cutting: Two main facades are simultaneously cut at a large angle, forming a prism shape as a whole;

Top oblique cut of tower crown: The top of a standard square tower is overall oblique cut, forming a diamond tower top;

Single slope large cutting: The entire wall of the building is uniformly inclined to form a one-way slope facade.

Enriching the layers of light and shadow: The sloping and vertical walls create a contrast between brightness and darkness, and the shadows dynamically change throughout the day, solving the problem of rigid flat facades; Weakening the sense of heaviness in buildings: Diagonal lines divide large solid walls, visually "reducing weight" and reducing the sense of oppression in high-rise and large buildings; Enrich the geometric order of the facade: diagonal lines break the horizontal and vertical grids, enhance delicacy, and adapt to modern, minimalist, and light luxury styles; Creating landmark recognition: The overall volume is slanted to form a unique skyline, distinguishing it from surrounding homogeneous square box buildings.
